Album Review: Mylo Xyloto by Coldplay

At this year’s Glastonbury Festival, Coldplay put on a show so spectacular that the Pyramid Stage itself burst into life with an explosion of colour. On Mylo Xyloto the colour is splashed right across the record sleeve, but musically there isn’t quite as much colour as youone might hope.
Jonny Buckland’s Edge-like guitar-play and Martin’s typically life-affirming lyrics are present as ever, not to mention the “whoa-ooh” vocal hooks favoured by the band making numerous appearances throughout the record – something that will annoy as many as it will delight.
Coldplay’s detractors won’t be converted by this album; it doesn’t push them further as a band, nor does it break any of the musical boundaries you might expect it to with Brian Eno in the producer’s chair. What the album does do is confirm that Coldplay are the kind of band who will be invited back to Worthy Farm again. And when they do, the Pyramid Stage will burst into life yet again.
