Album Review – Goblin by Tyler, The Creator

With the blanket coverage that has come with the recent emergence of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA / Odd Future for short) you’d be hard pushed to find someone who hasn’t heard of the group’s enigmatic leader, Tyler, The Creator.

Goblin is his second full length release after 2009′s under the radar release of Bastard and numerous appearances on the various mixtapes put out by Odd Future in recent years. With the majority of coverage related to Odd Future has been of their riot-like live sets, it’s surprising how musically relaxed the majority of Tyler’s release is.

This record focuses solely on Tyler’s voice, with all production placed firmly behind it. The eery echoes and occasional strings of the title track create an atmosphere that draws you in to listen to every single word the rapper speaks.

The lyrics that you’re drawn in to cover a range of topics from college, religion and therapy to misogyny, rape and murder. As you’d imagine, it’s the latter lyrics that have dominated the headlines of late. However, offensive though each of these lyrics may be, each of them come across as little more than the subject matter dreamed up by a bored middle class kid (Tyler is only 19 years old) with nothing else to do.

What makes this record impressive is that Tyler, The Creator has a way with words. He clearly uses the most shocking imagery he can to grab attention, but the way in which he wraps his words around beats is currently unparallelled. At 19 years old, Tyler has nowhere to go from here but up. If he could come up with less offensive lyrics, Tyler could take over the world.
