Album Review – Long Player Late Bloomer by Ron Sexsmith

After releasing 11 albums to almost no fanfare whatsoever, it is his twelfth offering that is finally getting Ron Sexsmith wider recognition for his work. With celebrity fans from Elton John to Bob Dylan, Sexsmith has long been known as a ‘songwriters songwriter’ but with his Radio 2 playlisted single ‘Believe It When I See It’ the public’s ears are finally beginning to prick up.

Long Player Late Bloomer is a beautiful record that deserves all the praise it’s getting, the country-rock style and pop melodies make each track easy to hum along to while rewarding those with keen ears with wonderful lyrics of both melancholy (‘Heavy clouds are hanging around, and the sun refuses to shine’) and hope (‘There are miracles appearing in broad daylight’).

It seems unlikely that when Sexsmith named this album he was aware of the effect it would have – this long player has indeed made a late bloomer out of him – much to our benefit.

Ron Sexsmith recently performed a track from his album for The Sun as part of their Biz Sessions, which can be seen here.
