For those unaware, The Wanted are a five piece boy band signed to the Geffen record label. Between the ages of 17 and 22, the boys fit the boy band mold perfectly, ie. they’re young, attractive, and can look into the distance with a serious face.

Their new single, ‘Heart Vacancy’, released a week before their self titled debut album hits the shelves, also fits the boy band mold perfectly; they’re all given a verse to sing and all come together for the chorus.

Watching the video for ‘Heart Vacancy’ can be fairly confusing. Despite it being a love song, there is no female actor for the boys to sing to. Instead, a lady in a crowd of people watching a film outdoors falls in love with a character on the screen, who then magically steps out of the screen to whisk her away. During all of this the boys are seen either larking about in the streets of a Croatian village or sitting down to sing the emotional chorus.

It is assumed that the chorus is an emotional one of course, but each singer appears to tackle it in a different way. Max, for example, looks as if each word he sings brings back memories of a lost love, while Nathan is seen leaning back and grinning throughout.

Fitting the boy band mold perfectly means that fans of said mold will love The Wanted while those against it will not. I happen to think Take That are an incredible group and still consider ‘Stay Another Day’ by East 17 to be one of the best Christmas songs of all time. Unfortunately ‘Heart Vacancy’ doesn’t come close to either East 17′s only UK number one nor any of Take That’s singles, though with their debut album out next week, I’ll reserve judgment on the band ’til then and just say that this is not a single I’ll be buying any time soon.
